LOCKED TOPIC - 2014: Balancing study, a social life & sleep!

Posted Mon Jun 30, 2014 1:34 pm

Staying up until 3 a.m, sleeping until midday and trying to catch up with a nap so you can do it all again.

Does this sound like you? You’re not alone, reports show up to two-thirds of students out there are struggling to get the 'sleep' part in the Study/Social/Sleep balance right. It’s a pretty tough act balancing all three when your routine is all over the place, but when it comes to study - sleep is critical for learning and memory.

Here are some tips to get the balance right:
- Try to maintain a somewhat regular routine - If you have early classes on some days, try not to sleep in on the others
- Avoid napping in the afternoon
- Set your alarm clock to go off in the evening to remind you to go to bed at a reasonable time
- Relax before going to bed - try wind down with some yoga or stretching, a good book or some relaxing music to get those stress levels down

Do you have any tips to manage the sleep/study/social balance?

If you’ve had a hard day and are feeling wound up and stressed before then finding something that can help calm them you and relax is definitely a good thing. Many people attest to the sleep benefits of playing a few mellow songs before hitting the sack, so we’ve put together some of our favourites!

I have began to close the curtains at night and make sure no light is entering into my bedroom. Also making sure that I can hear no noise during the night.....!!!! :D

I am up by 5.15am to get ready to leave the house at 6.15am as my journey to work is almost 2 hours each way. I get to bed between 10.00 and 10.45pm. There is not much time during the week to have a social life and on weekends we try to spend time with our pets, go on hikes or exploring little country towns.

I dont have a social life because of my past. I have my kids and my studies they keep me sane. Once my kids go to sleep at about 8 8:30pm im not far behind but then wake up in pain 4 to 6 hours later

Hi,
I've just joined for the upcoming challenge, do you think you could create a thread to cover shift workers ? This thread was the closest I could find, but doesn't really cover it. I can't be the only shift worker out there who has sleep problems as a result.
As an example, it's 3.30pm, and I'm sitting up in bed, between my 4 hours sleep this morning, woke up for the obligatory toilet trip, & am now waiting for the sleeping pill to kick in so I can get a few more hours before I have to get up at 7pm. Would have no hope of going back to sleep without medication.
I work night shift one week in every four, the other three I either work day shift - 7.30 till 4pm, or evening shift - 2pm till 10.30pm (often do an evening then a day, so get home at 11pm & have to get up at 6am to go back) - I've never been a good sleeper but 30 years of shift work is just the nail in the coffin!
Plus, as you can see, am using the iPad in bed! One of the habits I'm trying to break in the next six weeks.
But yes, a thread about shift sork and the sleep challenges it presents would be great. Thanks.

I find as a teacher my mind is going at 100 miles an hour so I am awake solving minor and major issues. By the time the weekend arrived I am wound up tight and cannot sleep so am up late and sleep late - destroys my weekends.
