Posted Thu May 22, 2014 6:12 pm

Here are 5 of our top tips on what to avoid before bed to make sure you get a good night's sleep!

1. Don’t pick a fight - a heated conversation with friends or family will only rile you up so save these
discussions until the morning.
2. Sharing the bed with technology - the other half of the bed isn’t appropriate for your Macbook, so keep your gadgets out of sight.
3. Popping pills - the key ingredient in cold & flu medications and nasal decongestants seem will keep you wired.
4. Overheating - Winter is coming…but jumpers, heaters and electric blankets will likely wake you up in the middle of the night, so don't load on the layers before hopping under the blankets.
5. Overeating - digestion uses up energy, and while this is happening the mind finds it difficult switch off.

Well that's our top 5, we'd love to hear what you find keeps you up at night?

I am notorious for staying on the computer before going to bed; whether its to check that last email or just catching up on something that i've put off doing. I always get the urge to check it as soon as i hit the sack, so i've now moved my laptop out of my bedroom and it stays out. it's been two days and despite having urges the comfort of my bed is too much effort to go out and get it and i have been sleeping soo much better

I use my phone as my alarm so it is all too easy to check Facebook or play a game or whatever after I've crawled into bed.
However I like to have it near in case my kids ring during the night as they all live away away.
Therefore its now on the windowsill
Close enough to hear
Far enough not to tempt
I finish my online stuff in front of the TV and then snap it shut, put in on the windowsill and go to bed.

HOWEVER
another activity before bed that interfers with me even getting there is SEWING
I love patchwork and when working on a project can often work thru the night without even realising it until the rooster crows
gotta watch that one!!!

Weird dreams or dreams where I'm frustrated about something, wakes me up during the night then I can't get back to sleep because I'm agitated. Any suggestions on how to clear the mind, I've tried lots of relaxation techniques that aren't working.

Fighting: I have been a bit stressed lately and found myself fighting with friends and family and that does result in lying in bed with my mind running 100 miles per hour thinking about everything and you feel terrible for it the next day.
Gadgets: im terrible i always lie in bed and look through my phone, I really need to stop doing this.
Pills: I don't take any medication of cold and flu tablets so this isn't a problem.
Overheating: I read somewhere that your room temperature should be between 18-22 degrees Celsius for sleeping and I have my heat pump set at 22 degrees and my bedroom is at the other end of the house so it a bit cooler and I really think it makes a difference.
Overeating: I have cut back to smaller meals at a night time and I find myself wanting to snack but Im doing a good job not to eat or drink 2 hours or more before bed because it feels terrible going to bed on full stomach of food.

The thing that keeps me up at night is my head.... switching it off!
I keep thinking of things I've done, things I haven't done, things I need to do. I just wish I had a switch to turn my mind off.

I always, without fail, wake up either once or twice in the middle of the night because I need to go to the toilet, which is really annoying because it means I always get broken sleep! I think it's because im always really thirsty at night time, so I drink lots of water. But I don't know how to stop this from happening.?
